A Long-Distance Call…

There’s something rather comfortable about being one of America’s three dominant wireless carriers.

Millions of customers. Recurring monthly bills. And a business built around something most people can barely go a day without.

Sure, Verizon VZ ( ▲ 1.75% ) , AT&T T ( ▲ 1.6% ) , and T-Mobile TMUS ( ▲ 1.23% ) compete fiercely for customers.

But competition looks a little different when it comes from outer space.

SpaceX SPCX ( ▼ 4.16% ) already has thousands of satellites orbiting Earth, delivering internet through Starlink.

Apparently, connecting the planet to the internet from space was just the warm-up.

Now Elon Musk has his sights on the phone in your pocket.

And judging by Wall Street’s reaction, America’s wireless giants may have received a rather expensive wake-up call.

Meanwhile, Cathie Wood happened to trim her SpaceX stake just hours before the announcement.

An interesting bit of timing in an already unusual story.

Let’s dig in. ⇩

Can You Hear Me Now?

SpaceX may have just secured an important piece of the puzzle.

On October 8, Grain Management announced an agreement to sell its nationwide 800 MHz wireless spectrum to SpaceX.

→ The reported price? Roughly $8 billion in cash.

Not your average phone bill. But…

Wireless spectrum consists of the radio frequencies that carry signals between devices. And some frequencies are considerably better at reaching your living room than others.

→ Higher frequencies: Can carry substantial amounts of data, but generally struggle more with distance and obstacles.

→ Lower frequencies: Travel farther and penetrate buildings more effectively, making them particularly valuable for broad coverage.

SpaceX’s agreement covers up to 14 MHz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band.

That could help its satellites connect directly to ordinary phones, even indoors.

The FCC still gets a vote.

The agreement needs approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and even then, SpaceX would still have to turn its plans into a working nationwide service.

But Wall Street wasn’t waiting for the paperwork.

Elon + Trump… BACK TOGETHER!?

Hey, take a look at this.

That’s Elon Musk having dinner with the President back in January.

Elon posted it himself.

His caption? “2026 is going to be amazing.”

And guess what’s happening now?

Three Very Expensive Dropped Calls…

Wall Street didn’t waste much time calculating what a fourth national wireless competitor might mean.

On October 9, the three biggest U.S. carriers had a particularly rough session.

Company

One-day stock move

T-Mobile ($TMUS)

−13.27%

AT&T ($T)

−9.81%

Verizon ($VZ)

−8.75%

SpaceX ($SPCX)

+1.25%

✱ T-Mobile lost more than 13% in a single session. SpaceX, meanwhile, barely budged.

A rather expensive reaction to a competitor that hasn’t launched the nationwide phone service at the center of the story.

So why the nerves?

The potential threat goes beyond another company offering cheaper phone plans.

SpaceX already operates a satellite network. Adding nationwide low-band spectrum could eventually allow it to compete for customers in a market dominated by three established carriers.

And wireless is a business where recurring monthly subscriptions are worth protecting.

✱ T-Mobile took the biggest hit.

The source suggests investors may be particularly concerned about its growth prospects, which depend in part on attracting customers from competing networks.

But the size of the selloff raises another question.

Wall Street is reacting to a potential competitor before the competition has properly begun.

Whether that reaction proves justified will depend on what SpaceX can actually deliver.

For now, the market has made one thing clear:
the possibility alone is enough to move billions.↓

The $4.7 Million Coincidence…

Meanwhile, Cathie Wood had a rather eventful week of her own.

On October 8, an ARK Invest fund sold 29,048 SpaceX shares, worth approximately $4.7 million at that day’s closing price.

Nothing particularly unusual about a fund manager trimming a position.

Except for the timing.

At 4:17 p.m. ET, after the closing bell, Grain Management announced its spectrum agreement with SpaceX.

ARK had sold its shares earlier that same day.

Here’s how the trades lined up:

Date

ARK’s SpaceX activity

Oct. 6

Sold 54,873 shares, worth ~$9.4 million

Oct. 8

Sold 29,048 shares, worth ~$4.7 million

Oct. 8, 4:17 p.m.

Spectrum agreement announced

Oct. 9

Reportedly sold another 22,276 shares

An eyebrow-raising sequence, at least at first glance.

But there’s some useful context.

ARK reportedly held approximately $979 million worth of SpaceX shares across its funds. These sales represented a relatively small portion of that position.

And SpaceX wasn’t the only company on ARK’s trading desk.

On October 8, ARK also trimmed several large technology holdings and purchased roughly $6.7 million worth of Kratos Defense ($KTOS).

The activity is consistent with broader portfolio adjustments, although the disclosures don’t establish why ARK made any particular trade.

And with SpaceX shares rising just 1.25% after the announcement, the market’s bigger reaction was happening elsewhere.↓

A $2.21 Trillion Question.

SpaceX has some rather expensive ambitions.

And Wall Street has already assigned them an extraordinary price tag.

According to the October 12 report, SpaceX is valued at $2.21 trillion, following its June IPO at $135 per share.

Consider its second-quarter numbers:

→ $7.81 billion in revenue.
→ $541 million in net losses.
→ $18.37 billion spent on capital projects.

And the spending plans don’t end there.

Forbes has reportedly detailed plans for SpaceX to raise $40 billion to purchase AI chips. Add a spectrum agreement reportedly worth another $8 billion, and the company’s ambitions come with a considerable funding requirement.

The math gets interesting.

SpaceX’s reported $2.21 trillion valuation is roughly 71 times its second-quarter revenue annualized — simply multiplying one quarter’s sales by four.

That’s a rough comparison, not a forecast or a conventional trailing valuation multiple.

Still, it illustrates just how much future growth investors may be anticipating.

And the proposed wireless business introduces another layer of uncertainty.

SpaceX would need regulatory approval, a functioning service, and paying customers before its mobile ambitions could contribute meaningfully to revenue.

The opportunity could be enormous. So could the distance between the announcement and the payoff.

For now, investors are weighing a company with ambitious expansion plans against a valuation that already reflects substantial expectations.
